Each intern will complete five two-week blocks of night float. The night float shift is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday.
The intern on night float is exempt from daytime responsibilities except one half day of clinic.
The weekend calls are covered by an intern and senior resident.
While on night float, the intern is responsible for the following:
- Admitting adult and pediatric patients
- Caring for patients who require attention overnight
- Delivering for family medicine and unattached OB patients
- Responding to all rapid responses and codes in the hospital
Backup is provided by a senior resident who is on site, by our Nocturnist (Monday through Thursday) and our Family Medicine and Internal Medicine faculty on the weekends.
Senior Night Float
Second-year residents have two, two-week blocks of night float and the third-year residents are responsbile for one, two-week block of night float.
Both second-year and third-year residents are considered seniors; therefore, either a second or third-year resident is in-house with the night float intern for call.
While on call, senior resident responsibilities include the following:
- Assisting interns with hospital admissions
- Delivering babies
- Supervising procedures
- Responding to any rapid responses and codes in the hospital
